According to local historian, J. Keller Reid, the Davis House
probably dates before 1840. It is one of the oldest
residences in Petersburg. The property, containing over 5
acres was deeded to the Davis family on May 12, 1880.
Sometime after that, the property was used as the parsonage for
the Methodist Episcopal Church (across the street) and traveling
preachers once stayed there. A deed dated November 16,
1898 indicates the property was conveyed back to the Davis
family by the church for the amount of $210.
In
August, 1978, the property was purchased from the Davis heirs
and subdivided. The original house was restored and
apartments were built in the back lot. The building was
used as offices for Shepherd College and later for insurance and
real estate businesses. The current owner, Nancy Cooley,
opened the Bookstore in November, 1992.
The
Davis House is a solid and friendly house of simple style.
It seems to feel right as a bookstore and gallery where it can
daily welcome visitors. Nancy Cooley invites you to stop
in and browse while appreciating the architecture of this
historic building. |
